Chavara Cultural Centre, Calicut stands as a vibrant beacon of art, dialogue, and community in the heart of Kozhikode, the storied ‘Harbour of Truth’. Established by the CMI Congregation’s St. Thomas Province in the late 1990s, the Centre embodies the vision of St. Chavara, whose teachings emphasised love, compassion, and societal harmony. Conceived as a neutral, non-sectarian space, it fosters dialogue, nurtures creativity, and promotes education, culture, and social engagement across all sections of society.
The initiative was entrusted to Fr. Job Mayiladiyil under the guidance of Fr. Justine Koyippuram, then Provincial. The decision to establish the Centre was formalised on 7 October 1996, and it officially opened its doors on 3 January 1997, inaugurated by Alphonse Kannanthanam IAS. The Chavara Public Library and Reading Room, inaugurated on 6 April 1999 by Justice V. R. Krishnaiyar, has since become a treasure trove for knowledge seekers, housing rare books, periodicals, newspapers in Malayalam and English, and reference materials for competitive exams.
Over the years, the Chavara Cultural Centre, Calicut has blossomed into a hub for cultural and social initiatives. The Chavara Women’s Cultural Forum, inaugurated by Justice D. Sreedevi in 2001, empowers women through skill development, community engagement, and social welfare programmes. The Amala Family Welfare Centre supports families seeking matrimonial guidance, while its publications and outreach programmes impact communities across Kerala.
The Centre also celebrates the literary arts, hosting national book festivals, book release events, and discussions with celebrated writers and scholars. Its programmes for children and youth-ranging from music, dance, painting, chess, and roller-skating to spoken English and academic coaching-nurture talent, confidence, and holistic growth. Seasonal camps like ‘Kaliveedu’ and ‘Kaliyarangu’ provide immersive experiences for students of all ages.
Through the Discourse Series on Eternal Values in a Changing Society, inaugurated by Sidhinadhananda Swamy in 2000, the Centre engages scholars and thinkers in conversations on ethics, spirituality, and civic responsibility. Complementing this, initiatives promoting eco-friendly living, health awareness, and sustainable practices foster conscious and responsible citizenship.
Rooted in Kozhikode’s cosmopolitan legacy, the Chavara Cultural Centre, Calicut celebrates festivals and national observances with inclusivity and joy. From Onam, Christmas, and Ramadan to Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti, every celebration is a reflection of the city’s rich cultural mosaic. Performances and workshops invite artists and scholars from across India, enriching the artistic landscape and nurturing dialogue.
Today, the Chavara Cultural Centre, Calicut is more than a building-it is a living testament to Kozhikode’s vibrant cultural heritage. It is a luminous heartbeat where tradition meets modernity, creativity meets dialogue, and knowledge meets compassion, inspiring generations to come.
